The mission of the City Clerk’s Office is to build public trust and confidence in Toronto's government. To this end, the Office administers municipal elections, manages the decision-making processes of Council, makes information accessible to the public while protecting privacy, and provides protocol services to its officials.
As Chief of Protocol, you’ll play a key role in fostering the government's relationship with its communities, enhancing and supporting the role of elected officials as the ’s authority on all matters related to protocol. This is a high-profile and high-impact position in which you’ll provide executive leadership and set the overall strategic and operational direction of the Clerk's Office Strategic Protocol and External Relations unit.
Leading by example, you’ll enhance the reputation and connectivity of the Mayor and Council to Toronto’s citizens by exhibiting and promoting a positive attitude toward the inclusivity of the City’s diverse communities and cultures. With this goal in mind, you’ll assist and motivate staff in developing and adopting a positive attitude and demeanour in order to represent and showcase the and its officials as leaders in diversity and inclusion.
By maintaining an awareness of up-to-the-minute political and cultural happenings, shifts and realities, you’ll confidently and expertly anticipate, forecast and develop strategies and action plans that enable the Mayor, Council and the City to be proactive leaders on the world stage. Your strong political acumen, negotiation, diplomatic and community building skills will support you in managing international and diplomatic affairs, and positions you to enable Members of Council and the City’s Senior Management team to maximize Toronto’s impact globally.
An exceptional communicator and relationship builder, you’ll uphold and enhance the reputation of the City, Mayor and Council in official functions, and advance their goals by creating an environment for successful diplomacy and engagement with local, national and international dignitaries and stakeholders, while positioning Toronto as a world-class city.
Your extensive experience in protocol, diplomatic and/or external relations and community building on a municipal, provincial, national or international level, and managing, cultivating and motivating a diverse, inclusive workforce of high-performance professionals, is supported by a post-secondary education in public relations, international relations or a related professional discipline or an equivalent background.
As a best practices leader in protocol, you’ll have demonstrated sound judgment and success in situations requiring a high degree of tact and diplomacy, as well as discretion and professionalism in dealing with sensitive and confidential information about political and diplomatic matters. Particularly important for success within our environment will be in embracing our organizational values of diversity, inclusion, equal opportunity, integrity and accountability.
A strategically minded, politically savvy leader with a deep understanding of the need to bring communities and neighbourhoods closer together with their government, you can influence, build and foster strong relationships with diverse internal and external stakeholders and communicate effectively with all levels of the organization, including senior government officials, politicians, foreign leaders, business leaders, and members of the diplomatic community.
You’re also an innovative thinker, highly committed to customer service excellence and adept at making fair, effective decisions, resolving issues and managing competing interests, priorities and demands in a fast-paced, rapidly evolving, politically sensitive and high-profile public environment. Familiarity with relevant government legislation and regulations, such as the Municipal Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act, and the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act is expected.
