The Educational Consultant: Staff Training provides consultation, process design, facilitation, resource development and consulting services to ensure that existing and future professional development and learning opportunities for staff advance meaningful Indigenous engagement and support ongoing efforts to create supportive environments for Indigenous people, programs and services. This position will assess existing professional development programs and emerging needs related to staff development at the Point Grey Campus. The position plans and delivers programs and services to cultivate professional, inclusive, and service oriented practices aligned to strategic commitments. In partnerships with relevant groups across campus, this position will provide professional development expertise for UBC units attending to knowledge gaps in historical, contemporary and institutional engagement with Indigenous perspectives and experiences and ways that these appear in the core functions of the institution.
This position will be an embedded position within CTLT Indigenous Initiatives and HR. This position will work collaboratively and strategically with both units and will guide the further design and support of professional development programming and existing services available to staff at UBC.
Situated within CTLT's Teaching, Learning and Professional Development (TLPD) portfolio, CTLT Indigenous Initiatives (II) offers programming, educational resources, consultations, and academic support focused on Indigenous engagement in curriculum, pedagogy, classroom climate, and professional development. II works with Indigenous community partners such as the Musqueam Indian Band, faculty, staff, and students to evaluate, develop, and bridge expertise around initiatives committed to improving classroom climate and campus environments conducive to student success, and strengthening local capacity to conduct effective approaches to teaching and learning in this area.
Reports jointly to the Sr. Strategist for Indigenous Initiatives in CTLT and to the Director of Organizational Development and Learning in UBC HR. This position collaborates with other members of the TLPD team and HR to design and facilitate programs and services, and works with other senior staff and faculty leaders across the university on join initiatives where applicable.
Collaborate with CTLT and UBC HR staff to develop and advise on educational resources and effective practices to support programs and services, and the professional development needs of the UBC employee community. This includes process design, facilitation, learning design, and other relevant professional development topics focused on working more effectively with Indigenous colleagues and the programs and services that support them more broadly at the institution.
Leads and/or contributes to the development, iteration, review, coordination and facilitation of newly developed programs and related workshops.
Consults on learning design and teaching and facilitation at the post-secondary level, with a focus on negotiating difficult topics and working through things such as bias, knowledge gaps.
Provides oversight on development of proposals, budgets, and resource allocations to ensure the delivery of programs, projects, and services of impact.
Liaises with stakeholders (for example, senior managers, team leads and staff members within CTLT and UBC HR and external committees, units, and task groups) to initiate and make recommendations that align to UBCs strategies and commitments to Indigenous engagement.
Maintain collaborative relationships with staff, faculty and departments involved in projects.
Ensure alignment of educational programming with university policies and strategic plans, governmental regulations and international governance.
Respond to confidential needs and requests of individual UBC employees and liaise with other relevant stakeholders as required.
Works independently with general direction from Sr. Strategist Indigenous Initiatives (CTLT) and the Director of Organizational Development and Learning UBC HR.
Oversees junior staff and project teams of varying composition, depending on the scope and nature of the specific project. Project teams may include University faculty members, students and staff, colleagues within CTLT and UBC HR, members of other teaching and learning units, members of other educational institutions, Indigenous partners and specialists hired for specific tasks.
Consequence of Error/Judgement
This position also requires familiarity with communication and consultation processes and protocols in working with Indigenous faculty, staff, students, and community members. A lack of familiarity with the issues for Indigenous engagement in teaching and learning could result in dysfunctional or ineffective understandings and approaches, which could perpetuate problematic situations and negatively impact students, work colleagues, and others.
Errors in judgment may have negative consequences for the quality of teaching and learning at UBC. They may also result in the inefficient use of resources, and/or poor relations among educational developers, staff or individuals participating in facilitated processes. They may damage the reputation of the University and the Centre for Teaching, Learning and Technology. Must exercise a high level of professionalism and judgment when dealing with various units and departments, as well as with non-UBC colleagues. Failure to follow best practices and exercise sound judgment could result in significant resource and reputation costs to the Centre, and could possibly have a negative impact on future internal and external partnerships.
Master's degree in Education. Master's degree in a relevant discipline, preferably with a primary focus in Indigenous Studies, Adult Education, Educational Psychology or related field. Minimum of six years experience or the equivalent combination of education and experience. Experience in curricular design, learning experience design, resource development, program development, facilitation, and evaluation in a higher education setting, especially in the areas of critical Indigenous studies and social justice.
Demonstrated ability to conduct respectful consultation and collaboration with Indigenous communities.
Experience in design, development and facilitation of processes and educational programs or the equivalent combination of education and experience. Experience in facilitating group processes both face-to-face and online.
Experience in teaching face-to-face and using online and multimedia technologies. Experience with educational program planning and evaluation.
Experience in strategic engagement and planning processes is an asset.
Effective oral and written communication, interpersonal, planning, organizational, and problem solving skills.
Ability to work both independently and within a team environment.
Knowledge of University policies and procedures is considered an asset.
Ability to maintain accuracy and high attention to detail. Ability to think strategically and exercise diplomacy, tact, and discretion.
