Regional Biologist Job Opening in Watson Lake

The Fish and Wildlife Branch leads the collaborative and adaptive management of wild Yukon species and their habitats for conservation, appreciation and sustainable use.

Reporting to the Manager, Regional Programs, this position is responsible for developing and conducting fish and wildlife studies in the Liard region (southeast Yukon) in conjunction with First Nations, related Branch programs, planning groups, users and the public. The primary management focus of the position is fish and wildlife species that are locally harvested, including but not limited to moose, caribou, sheep, goats, bears, wolves, and freshwater fish. The Regional Biologist communicates and consults with resource users and is the main point of contact for the Branch in the community of Watson Lake, while also performing other related duties.

Essential Qualifications

A degree in biology, environmental sciences or natural resources (or related field);
Experience conducting biological field studies (budget management, logistical) for an employer, post education- is preferred;
Experience analyzing and interpreting biological data; including the use of geographic information systems
Experience collaborating with a variety of partners and stakeholders (Eg. First Nations, co-management boards and councils, various public bodies, etc.) on issues of mutual interest (e.g. land use reviews, management planning, etc.) by providing expert technical advice and communicating study results and complex biological concepts.
Experience supervising or leading staff is an asset
Experience managing budgets/contracts will be considered an asset

Candidates who have education, training, and/or experience equivalent to the essential qualifications listed above will be equally considered.

Desired Knowledge, Skills and Suitability
Candidates should have and may be assessed on:

Problem solving including excellent analytical and judgement skills
Interpersonal skills and partner focus, to build effective working relationships inside and outside the organization
Project Management including planning and organizational skills
Knowledge and understanding of the biology and habitat requirements of freshwater fish and/or wildlife and of the principles of habitat, fish and wildlife management;
Communication skills (written and oral) to document, present, and connect with various audiences (e.g. Boards and Councils, government agencies, etc.)
Cultural aptitude to apply knowledge and interpersonal skills that allow understanding, appreciation, and working closely with individuals from cultures other than their own.

Additional Information:

Condition(s) of Employment: Valid Yukon Class 5 driver’s licence (or equivalent)

Job Requirements: Travel to various communities, willingness to work outdoors in various weather conditions and to travel by small aircraft, ATV, boat and 4X4 truck. The successful candidate is expected to work primarily in the Watson Lake regional office and may work evenings and weekends.
