Job Summary
This position's primary purpose in the lab will be to lead and oversee technical research support to research group. In addition, the successful applicant will assist in the maintenance of the research laboratory. These tasks will include a combination of equipment maintenance, and orientation of new trainees and/or junior personnel.
Organizational Status
This position will play a major role in Hayden lab, and will be reporting directly to Dr. Michael Hayden.
This position reports directly to the Principal Investigator, Dr. Michael Hayden and will work closely with the post-doctoral fellows, fellow technicians and graduate students in the Hayden Lab.
Work Performed
As a technician on a therapeutic project, designs and conducts experiments, analyzes and compiles data in study report preparation
Performs complex animal surgical procedures (eg. stereotaxic injections and brain infusions); whole animal perfusion fixation; organ harvest; brain micro dissection; blood and CSF collection; and injections (eg. tail vein);
Performs advanced techniques in immunohistochemistry, immunofluorescence, and
immunocytochemistry
Performs molecular biology techniques such as western blotting, immunoprecipitation, and qPCR;
Performs cell culture specializing in complex primary neuronal cultures;
Designs and writes standard operating procedures for developed methodology;
Troubleshoots procedures and optimizes the application of the procedure to a specific project.
Analyses results and provides recommendations to supervisor on reasons for variances problems/issues;
Ensuring proper use and maintenance of equipment;
Demonstrates equipment, techniques and procedures to lab personnel;
Managing safe handling and proper disposal of chemicals, biohazardous, and infectious materials in accordance with WCB and WHIMIS;
Perform other related duties


Supervision Received
The general scope and direction of the research is under the jurisdiction of the principal investigator. This position works independently, reporting bi-weekly to Dr. Michael Hayden during individual meetings and at lab meetings.
Supervision Given
This position does involve occasional training and orientation of trainees and research assistants.
Consequence of Error/Judgement
The incumbent will make important decisions affecting the functioning of the lab. Incompetence or incorrect decisions could jeopardize research progress, collaborations, finances and employee safety, and adversely impact future project objectives and personnel.
Qualifications
Undergraduate degree in a relevant discipline or Graduation from a technical college or institute. Minimum of 3 years related experience or the equivalent combination of education and experience. Ability to maintain accuracy and attention to detail. Ability to prioritize and work effectively under pressure to meet deadlines.
Ability to effectively manage multiple tasks and priorities. Proven ability to multi-task in a deadline oriented environment with minimal supervision. Ability to effectively use <job-specific software> at an intermediate level. (e.g., Outlook, MS Word, MS Excel). Ability to work effectively independently and in a team environment. Effective oral and written communication, analytical, and interpersonal skills. Ability to perform research-related procedures (e.g., prepare solutions) (e.g., dissecting) (e.g., prepare specimens).
Extensive knowledge of mouse anatomy and surgical techniques;
Extensive knowledge of Molecular Biology;
Knowledge of general laboratory techniques.
