Assistant Fire Marshal Job Opening in Cape Dorset

Positions are available in Cape Dorset (1) and Rankin Inlet (1), Nunavut. Please specify in your cover letter your location preference.

Reporting to the Deputy Fire Marshal, the Assistant Fire Marshal is responsible for the effective implementation of fire safety and fire prevention, which includes responsible for providing information, advice and guidance to owners, occupants, employers, employees, contractors, architects, engineers and the general public (clients), as to the requirements of the Nunavut Fire Safety Act and Regulations. This position directly and indirectly impacts on all Nunavummiut. The Assistant Fire Marshal is a regional consultant, advisor and resource person for public and commercial buildings, fire and life safety requirements and decisions that will directly impact Government of Nunavut (GN) departments and agencies, public and the private sector. The life safety issues that this position enforces, to ensure a safety and may result in an increase in project cost thereby affecting budgeting.

The Assistant Fire Marshal may deliver or assist with the delivery of Nunavut Fire Marshal’s Office activities including, fire fighter training, inspections, fire investigations, code enforcement and public fire safety education. The incumbent will provide technical information to the GN, private organizations, architects and engineers.

The knowledge, skills, and abilities required for this job are usually obtained through Certification or equivalent in NFPA 1001 – Level 2, Fire Fighter Professional Qualification, NFPA 1031 – Level 2, Fire Inspector, NFPA 1033Fire Investigator or NFPA 921 – Fire and Explosion Investigator and NFPA 1041 – Level 1 Fire Service Instructor, along with three (3) years’ experience in the fire service. NFPA 1041 – Level 2, Fire Service Instructor, NFPA 1035 – Level 1, Fire and Life Safety Educator and NFPA 1021 – Level 1 Fire Officer will be considered assets. You must provide a copy of your Class 3 driver’s license with Air Brake Certification or equivalent prior to appointment as it is a condition of employment.

The Official Languages of Nunavut are Inuktitut, Inuinnaqtun, English and French. Fluency in two or more of Nunavut’s official language is an asset. Knowledge of Inuit language, communities, culture, land and Inuit Qaujimajatuqangit is an asset.

Equivalencies that consist of an acceptable combination of education and experience may be considered.
